My Crazy Find at the Local Farmers Market

I started Labor Day weekend off with a bang.  Poo, Patz and I headed out, Saturday morning, to our local farmers market to score some whole foods and we did just that.  It was a cool 55 degrees and a little wet but we decided to face it head on and get us some veggies!

I’m somewhat ashamed to admit that I haven’t been downtown this year to check out the farmers market and I have had many people tell me how much there is to offer.  But, Poo does plant a small garden in our backyard every season, so ……. I do, kind of …….. have a reasonable excuse for not having yet gotten down there.

Although drizzly weather kept the space from filling entirely, there were still many booths to choose from.  Everything from farm fresh vegetables and meats to hand crafted bowls made out of cherry, walnut and cedar.

I came home with several items, but two, in particularly, I’m very anxious to try………… the purple snake beans and the purple potatoes.

The snake beans measured around 24″ with one being 25″ long.  Apparently, from a little research I did, these guys are native to Southeast Asia and are used in Chinese, Filipino and other Asian cuisine.  I have read conflicting reports on exactly HOW to cook them but I was told, when I bought them, to cook them like a green bean or use them in a stir fry dish.

Purple Potatoes

When I was taking my FOK cooking class, we learned that purple potatoes were a high quality food.  They are rich in antioxidants, as well as high in nutritional value.  Ever since learning of this food, I have been searching all the grocery stores for them and haven’t had any luck finding them. Then, by chance, come across them at the farmers market!

I must confess though, my favorite stop along the way was, the booth with all the gluten free baked goods.  I don’t eat too many sweets but, in  that moment, I think my eyeballs popped out of my head!

(You know that little emoji where the eyeballs are huge?  That was me!)

Now …….. I had to make a choice here.   I WAS getting some kind of little treat, I was standing in the rain after all!  After a quick explanation of all the offerings, Poo and I, both, settled on the Raspberry White Chocolate Scone.  In retrospect, OBVIOUSLY, we should have each chose something different so we could sample two products instead of one.  But…. Oh……. MY……. Gosh!  Sooooo completely delectable 🙂

Patz got something new they were trying out.  They called them “Patachou Puffs.”  They were good too, but ohhh those scones………..

I will be returning to the farmers market, hopefully on a regular basis.   I also will be paying better attention to the name of that bakery so I can find them on FB or other social media outlets as they do take orders in advance and you can pick them up at the market.  BTW, They had one loaf of GF bread left when we approached their table that looked completely scrumptious and wouldn’t ya know…….. the lady right in front of us bought it.  Ugh!
