Sometimes A Weekend Away Is All You Need!

Do you ever feel like you just have to get outta dodge?
Ohhhhhh, yes.
Newport, Kentucky here we come. Why Newport? It is such a quaint place with so many fun things to do. Go, if you ever get the chance.
Truth be told, my husband has been a Reds fan since the beginning of time and he enjoys going to one game every year.
Just one game. That’s all he asks of me and so, I oblige. (Can you tell baseball is not my favorite sport?)
Each time we attend, I learn just a smidge more about the game which has made it more enjoyable to sit in those hard plastic bench seats for what seems like hours. Oh……. because it is for hours!
That’s one of the things I don’t like so much…….the game drags on for hours. I must have a short attention span. 🙂
This game was exciting though, as it came down to the last inning and the game was tied up.
It went into extra innings, 3 I think, before the Reds did themselves in 🙁

Atlanta finally got the best of them.
We stayed in a hotel right across the river, on the Kentucky side. It was so close to The Great America Ballpark that we walked there and back.
Because it was kind of a “date weekend,” I really would have liked to dress a little nicer but with all the walking involved, I put on those, ohhh soooo cute, running shoes that cushion the knees.
The next day we went to the Newport Aquarium. My husband is a runner and won tickets to the aquarium last year at a 5K. We had until the end of the month to use them, so it made for a pretty fantastic weekend!
The aquarium is located at the Newport Levy. There is a lot of shopping, live music, great restaurants, and local events that take place almost every weekend.

The day before we were there they had a power outage and had to close down. I think they said that had never happened before, but every animal was healthy and accounted for. Whew! We must have spent over 2 hours walking through the aquarium and attending a couple of the live demonstrations that they offer daily, including this one with one of their most popular penguins. (BTW, this aquarium is open 365 days a week!)  Afterward, we walked around the shopping area and found a great place to eat lunch overlooking the river. As we dined we watched from the balcony, of the restaurant, the event gathering below us. We watched the riverboats go by and took in the beautiful scenery.
We finished our weekend by stopping at the best gourmet, as well as international, grocery store. There is no other like …………… Jungle Jim’s!There are two in Ohio so if you ever are close to one, and even if you’re not, it is sooooo worth the detour!  This picture depicts just the cheeses. As you can see, they sell cheese from all over the world, and lots of them. If this is just the cheese isle, you can imagine what the rest of the store looks like ……You might call it ……… “information overload.”  This is a picture of the olive bar, although this only shows about 1/3 of what’s available to choose from.
