Have you ever tried to make your own seasoning?  It is well worth the  casual effort it takes to whip up a homemade seasoning or spice for your cooking needs. Just take a look on the back of your store-bought spice or seasoning jars sometime and read over the list of ingredients.  You will, most likely, be shocked.

Some of the additives for plain garlic salt include:  food starch, sugar, partially hydrogenated vegetable oil and other oils.

Want to try making your own now?  Once you get your toes wet, you will want to start making more of your own mixes.  Before you know it, you will be making Berbere!

If you’re still feeling a bit apprehensive, try this easy seasoned garlic salt recipe.  It’s a traditional mix of garlic and salt, with a little extra oomph.

One of the great things about this particular recipe is you can add whatever “seasoning twist” you prefer.  Be creative.  Go crazy. Experiment.  Add whatever seasonings you like.  I happen to love dill, so I will probably add that next time around.

Homemade Seasoned Garlic Salt

Ingredients:

  • 6 T      sea salt
  • 2 T      garlic powder
  • 1/2 t    onion powder
  • 1/2 t    dried parsley
  • 1/2 t    celery seed

Directions:

Put all the ingredients into a spice blender** and blend for a few seconds.  I pour the mixture into a measuring cup so I can easily transfer the seasoning into an air-tight jar.  (You could also just clean and reuse the store-bought jar that says Garlic Salt on it.)  Makes about 1/2 cup of seasoning and easily fits into a 6 oz shaker jar.

**I only use a spice blender because I use a Pink Himalayan Course Salt, but if you use table or other fine salt, you don’t need the blender.

So easy …….. and easy is my middle name!

…….. Wait, that didn’t come out right.
