My Cooking Class is Finally Here!

Class Started…… Days to Complete Course:  89

My cooking class started on Tuesday of this week but it had slipped my mind.  After work I hurried off to my haircut appointment, came home, got dinner on the table, and when we were cleaning up my husband said to me, “Didn’t your class start today?”  I couldn’t believe I had forgotten!  I have been looking forward to this for weeks and I was thinking about it all day on Monday, even part of Tuesday, and then……… “POOF,” outta my mind.

It reminded me of when I was growing up and we had chores that we had to do every Saturday.  We weren’t permitted to watch cartoons or go out to play until we completed our chores.  When you’re a kid, that was motivation to get things done!  I suppose it probably set the tone for my life:  You know what you have to get done for the day, you prioritize those things and then execute the plan.

Then you get to play! 

You probably know as well as I that our jobs, children and other commitments in our lives can sometimes take precedence in such a profound way.  This was especially true for me when my children were growing up.  “Business,” in all forms, came first.  Fun was last.  🙁     I now know that many of those things weren’t as important as I perceived them and that what is truly valuable in life is BALANCE.

I did finally get started on my classwork.  I started out with the video tutorial, which helps acclimate the student, (I’m still trying to wrap my head around the fact that I voluntarily signed up for this course), to the website, the grading procedure, and how to navigate the units, lessons and the tasks required.  After watching the tutorial, I realized this is not just some fly-by-night online course, this is for real.   Ohhhh boy, I might be in deep doo-doo!

The course is composed of 9 units.  Each unit has multiple lessons.  Each lesson has tasks.  182  total tasks in the course.  I have 90 days to complete the course, with a passing grade of 75 or higher, to receive culinary credit.  I have completed the first 11 tasks and, like the good student I never was in high school or college, I actually took notes.  Yes, I might have to study.  🙂


I made this the other night from one of the cookbooks that is affiliated with the cooking school.  This is not part of the lesson plan but it looked good and I wanted to try it.

I photographed it on my “everyday” dishes, the same dishes I have used for the past 14 years.  They have seen better days and I love them so much but, in reality, I have been prepared to part with them, I just haven’t done it yet!

One of the course requirements is that the food I prepare must be displayed, and photographed, on a totally white plate with no design.   I will have to purchase at least one white plate to display my assignments for submission.  The truth is, I have been on the lookout for my next beloved everyday kitchen plate set, however, I have never had a desire to eat off of plain white dishes!

Yesterday.         NOW.       Tomorrow.
